How to recognise fake OTP requests

Keep your account safe from scams.

Updated over a week ago

One-Time Passwords (OTPs) are a security feature used to protect your accounts. They help make sure that it really is you trying to access your details and account.

OTPs are usually very secure, but fraudsters can use them to gain unauthorised access by sending fake OTP requests.

Please make sure you read this article carefully to keep your Zilch account safe from fake OTP requests.

What is an OTP?

OTP stands for one-time password, and it’s a unique, temporary code that is sent to the phone or email you used to register for Zilch. OTPs add an extra layer of security to your accounts, as you can only confirm an OTP request from a second account or device.

When is an OTP request suspicious?

You should never respond to an OTP request if:

  • You didn’t attempt to log into any account and have no reason to receive one

  • You’ve noticed other suspicious activity on any other online accounts you have

  • The OTP request is coming from an unknown sender

What should I do if I receive an unrecognised OTP request?

It’s important to never respond to OTP requests, not even to contact the sender to explain the error. Make sure you:

- Do NOT enter the code into the OTP request

- Contact Zilch Customer Support immediately

- Change your password

- Continue to monitor all your accounts for other suspicious activity.
